Hi Kevan, Thanks for your file. I have been tracing my Pool family for over 30 years but I have never found much 'new' material since my early research excepting a few branches from cousins. I have never been able to connect the Swordwell Pools with my family who were in Howes Farm. I have below 4 generations from the earliest Pool ancestror whom I am confident is my ancestor. ie George Pool who married Mary Aitchison. ( I won't bother sending you further generations as it can't be of interest to you even for a reference. Margaret Pool married Matthew Pool of another Pool family but although I have his birthdate I don't know where I got it! or who his parents are. The funny thing is way back in the late 1970's I was looking at the original old parish books and I have in my notes Matthew Pool as born on the same page as Margaret Pool but I have not recorded his parents and now depite looking back at the old parish records can't find the entry for Matthew Pool. A mystery or what!? So although I have Margaret Pool married to Mathew Pool I don't know where his family origins are from. He may have been a Swordwell Pool but I don't know. As he died in 1833 there is no parents information as in a death register. Here is my Pool family. If you see anything that may connect us let me know. I am sure there is no relative information but maybe you might see some clue in the naming pattern or something. I have tried to find it again using the MICROFICHE copies but can't find it !!! . The date of birth fits his death date and age so I believe it must be correct. I wonder if the page I saw was an original and the microfiche was a rewritten copy of that original and missed out Matthews birth. Funny thing is I did not record his parents!! Only other explanation is I must have had a psychic moment!! (Daughter Martha, Mathew's eldest gave this information and I am sure it is correct) Another Mathew Irving was born in 1777 to William Irving and Isobel Dalgeish but he was a merchant in Dornock. I am sure Martha daughter of Mathew was named for Ann's mother Martha Holiday. John Irving, I reckon, married shortly after Mathew's birth Margaret Shennan and after her death he married his daughter in law's sister Mary Pool. There is the possibility that the father of Mathew, John Irving, is not husband of Mary Pool but Matthew named his first son John so I reckon his father was still alive then. It is funny but I can not find a son called Mathew in the Irving children until Mathew was born in 1815? The burial stone of Mathew Irving and Margaret Pool is in the churchyard of Dornock Church to the North west of the church. In it it states that JWS was born on the 10/10/1821 at St John's British Possession, America or Americas. The information was written on 1/3/1873. It couldn't have been Henrietta's writing though as she always signed anything with her mark, so obviously she couldn't write. A bit of a discrepancy arises on the marriage certificate, as JWS states that he was born in St John's, (New Brunswick??) . He also says that his mother was a Julia Brown and his father James Smith whose occupation was ship builder. R Wilson Jan 2011 Since then I have found a James Smith Shipbuilder in St John's New Brunswick Canada so the marriage certificate is most probably correct?. I had John William from St John's Barbados. I had heard from another Gass cousin he was probably the son of a former slave and that fitted in with his dark skin. Below is the exerpt showing James Smith, Shipbuilder. I found that William arrived in St John's in 1820 and married about 1827 to Margaret McMorran. It is possible he had an illegitimate child to an African American woman namely Julia Brown in 1821 R Wilson Jan 2011 The Marco Polo was a 3-masted wooden clipper ship, launched in 1851 at Saint John, New Brunswick. It was named after Venetian explorer Marco Polo. Construction and designIt measured 184 feet in length, with a beam of 36 feet and draught of 29 feet. It displaced 1625 tons and had 3 decks. At its launch on April 17 at the shipyard of James Smith, located at the mouth of Marsh Creek on Courtney Bay, the Marco Polo's keel struck the mudflat and the vessel fell on its side, injuring several workers. It was floated free by April 22, apparently suffering little damage, however due to its large size, it subsequently grounded in Marsh Creek where it lay for 2 weeks before again being floated free. It is speculated that during one or both of these incidents, the vessel's keel was affected, which may have led to its subsequent speed records. 1851 census Saint John County, Kings and Sydney Wards, page 13 19 19680 Smith James M Head 48 Irish ship builder date of entry to colony 1820 20 19680 Smith Margaret F Wife 45 Irish 1820 21 19680 Smith Jas. The Daily Telegraph. St. John, N. B. Tidings reached St. John yesterday of the death of, in the course of the same morning, at Woodstock of James SMITH, Esq., who was one of the most famous shipbuilders this city has produced. Mr. Smith began life as most famous builders have done by handling the broad axe in a shipyard, but having a natural aptitude for business, and especially for designing noble ships, he soon went into ship building of his own account. He was the first man who began to build at Courtenay Bay and his first vessel, the Courtenay, was launched there about 1835. First and last we believe he built about sixty large vessels, among which we may name the Margaret, the Queen of the Seas, Alfred, Ben Nevis, Onward and Marco Polo. The latter vessel, which was famous for her great speed and rapid passages, was built in 1851, and is still afloat hailing from South Shields. The Onward built in 1850 is also afloat still and so are the Margaret and Alfred, built in 1858 and 1853 respectively. When Mr. Smith lived in Liverpool some years ago, he found 8 or 9 of his ships in that port. Mr. Smith had at one time accumulated a large fortune, but was unfortunate to have one of his ships burnt on the stocks and to meet with some reverses in his large business. His energy and skill have made New Brunswick known all over the world as deservedly celebrated for building famous clipper ships, beautiful in appearance, fast sailors and large carriers. Mr. Smith was much and deservedly esteemed in all his relations in life. He had attained to a good old age but until a day or two (ago) he seemed hale and hearty. The immediate cause of his death was inflammation of the lungs, the first symptoms of which appeared on Wednesday." Notes for A LEXANDER LENNOX: son of James Lennox, Shoemaker and Harriet Sliman v. Notes for G EORGE IRVING: A lot of the family information on George Irving's Family from Linda Prosser, Canada From Linda Prosser:- "Rexton/Richibucto are small inlets from which the main industry was farming, lumber and shipping. Many ships were built in Rexton (which use to be known as Kingston) and Richibucto as well as Newcastle, Buctouche, and Bathurst in the northern part of N.B. Trading went on between Annan and these coastal towns. The Jardine brothers frequently had ships sailing back and forth. Unfortunately now most of that is gone and all that is left are small sea side communities. A lot of my info was gleaned from my grandmother Irving over 30 years ago and a lot was also obtained from the various relatives. Some info is from the 1881,1901, 1911 census, some from the newpapers as well as the New Brunswich Dept of Stat. which can be found on line. The 1901 census has a connection to the Dept of Stat under the name PANB, which lists the marriages, births, etc. I also have been to the grave sites and taken photos, and many of the cemetaries are on line as well.
